Decree of the President of the Italian Republic (D.P.R.) 3rd  October 1980.
Acknowledgment of the controlled and warranted origin denomination of the "Barbaresco"  Wine

Art. I. - The controlled and warranted origin denomination of "Barbaresco" is reserved to the red wine "Barbaresco", already acknowledged as controlled origin denomination with Decree of the President of the Italian Republic, April 23rd 1966, following the conditions and the requirements stated in these Rules of Production.

Art. 2. - The "Barbaresco" must be obtained only by the varieties "Michet", "Lampia" and "Rosè" of "Nebbiolo" vine grapes grown in the area described in the following Art. 3

Art. 3. - The area of origin of the grapes suitable for "Barbaresco" production, includes the territories already defined with the ministerial decree of August 31st 1933, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale  n. 238, October 12th 1933, as well as those fulfilling  the conditions of the second paragraph of Art. 1 of the Presidential Decree of July 12th 1963, n. 930, including the whole territory of the villages of Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso (previously hamlet of Barbaresco) and part of the hamlet "San Rocco Seno d'Elvio", previously part of the Barbaresco territory and joined to the town of Alba with Presidential Decree of 17th April 1957, n. 482, within the province of Cuneo.

Art, 4 - The environmental and growing conditions of the vineyards assigned to the production of "Barbaresco" should be traditional for the area and anyway only those suitable to give to the grapes and the derived wine the specific characters of quality.
Therefore only hilly vineyards of proper location and orientation, with mainly clayey-calcareous soils, could be acceptable. The implant orders, the way of growing and the system of trimming must be those generally adopted and however proper to avoid modifications in the characters of the grapes and wine. Any form of forcing is excluded, particularly the anular incision.
The maximum production per acre of specialized colture must not exceed about 700 lbs of grapes.
Even in exceptionally favourable years, the production must be reduced by mean of an accurate choice of the grapes, provided that the production would be no more than 20% higher than the above fixed maximum ratio.
The maximum yeld of the grapes into wine must not be higher than 70% at the first decanting and 65% after the compulsory ageing time.

Art. 5. - Within the limits of the maximum yeld described in the previous art. 4,   the competent regional offices, having acquired the opinions of the professional organizations and interested fondations and institutes, annually fix befor September 20th, in an approximate way, the mean product ratio of the grapes and the date of the beginning of the grape-harvest.
The interested producers that preview an higher yeld than the indicated one, must promptly (and not less than 5 days before beginning the grape-harvest) notify the beginnning date and  the extimated over-production with a priority letter to the competent offices of the Piedmont region, for their proper assessments. The mean yeld must be fixed taking count of the season and the environmental growing conditions (implant systems, growing, etc.) in order to assure the correspondence of the producer report  with the real vineyards production.

Art. 6. - Wine-making and compulsory ageing operations must be performed within the area delimited in art. 3. The Minister of Agriculture and Forests, having acquired the opinion of the national committee for the protection of wine origin denominations, may allow to perform such operations of wine-making and compulsory ageing by wine-farms having plants in the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria, included in art. 4 of the rules attached to the presidential decree (D.P.R.) of 23rd April 1966, providing thhese farm could demonstrate already performed these operations in the past, shoving proper certificate of the competent Chamber of Commerce.

Art. 7. - The grapes destinated to wine-making, after proper choice, whenever necessary, must assure to the wine an alchoolic rate of at least 12 degrees.
During wine-making, only usual and honest procedures are admitted, necessary to confer to the wine its particular character. Conservation and ageing should be as wel lperformed following the traditional methods.
The wine shoud undergo a minmum period of ageing of 2 years, conserved for at least one year in oak or chestnut barrels. The ageing period begins from 1st January after the wine-making.
In order to get a better quality, it is possible to add younger Barbaresco, or vice-versa older wine of exactly  the same kind, in a measure not bigger than 15%.
The origin controlled and warranted denomination wine "Barbaresco", having completed the compulsory ageing, must be submitted to a tasting test, following pt. 4 of art. 5 of the presidential decree of July 12th 1963 n. 930.
This tasting test must be performed by a proper commission, at the Agricultural College of Alba, where this commission has seat, following the rules of the Minister of Agriculture, having acquired the opinion of the national committee for the protection of wine origin denominations and other interested institutions.

Art. 8. - The "Barbaresco" when admitted to the market must fulfill these characters:
colour: garnet red with orange reflexes; scent: characteristic, ethereal, pleasant, intense; taste: dry, full, vigorous, austere but velvety, harmonic; minimal alchoolic rate 12,50 degrees; total acidity minimal 5/1000; minimal dry extract about 0.9 ounce per liter.
The Minister of Agriculture, with an own decree, may modify the above mentioned limits for acidity and dry extract.

Art. 9. - The "Barbaresco" aged not less than four years may bring the adjunctive denomination "reserve".
The bottles used for selling must be of the "albeisa" shape or a similar historical or traditional shape, with a content consented by the curren Laws, but anyway not less than 350 cc (0.7 pints), made of dark glass and closed with a cork. It is forbidden to pack and present the bottles in a way that could swindle the consumer or offend the charm of the wine.

Art. 10. - It is forbidden to use with the denomination "Barbaresco" any other qualification other that those described by the present rules, such as adjectives like: extra, fine, selected, and similar.
It is anyway consented to use denominations referring to names, trademarks, etcc, not having laudatory meanings that may swindle the buyer.
It is moreover consented to use geographical or toponomastic indications, referring to towns, villages, hamlets, farms and similar, or geographical specifications (hill, ridge, vineyard, and other similar of local use) that are present within the limits of the area delimitated by the previous art. 3 and where the wine does really comes from.
The producers interested in using on their own or let use to the grapes buyers geographical or toponomastic denominations or sub-zones, should ask for this to the competent Authority every other year.

Art. 11. - On the "Barbaresco" bottles labels must appear the real year of production.
The origin controlled and warranted denomination "Barbaresco" must always appear in good evidence, anyway with fonts not lower tha 2/5 of any othe indication appearing on the label.

Art. 12. - Whoever produces, sells, or distributes wine with origin controlled and warranted denomination "Barbaresco" not responding to the above explained rules is punished after art. 28 of presidential decree of July 12th 1963, n. 930.
